Hypothes.is: Modeling & Prompting Meaningful Annotations
UAF's Center for Teaching and Learning arranged for a vendor webinar presentation from on their annotation tool. Although some of the talk centered on new features with Hypothesis, such as the ability to annotate images using its rectangular region grabbing tool and pinpoints of interest, a good portion of the conversation went beyond the specifics of the software, and towards methods best suited to conducting rich conversations in the classroom.
It is rare in the webinar space, where vendors will speak to broader pedagogical principles such as prompting, conducting and evaluating online discussions. Other topics included designating roles amongst participants to foster good conversation and best practices to improve involvement. It was refreshing to gain such insights from a private company. even provided links to peer reviewed studies that they say helped guide the design of their Hypothesis annotation tool.
