Friday Focus: We have the expertise

    September 29, 2023

At the beginning of each new semester, I often introduce myself and explain the role of the chancellor to new students, faculty, and staff who recently joined UAF. At these events, I share that a large part of my job is working with all of our administrators, faculty, staff and students to do everything we can to execute our mission and live our vision: excellence through transformative experiences. Having such an inspiring purpose is one of the reasons I am so passionate about UAF. Across the spectrum of people I meet, I am often surprised how many aren't aware of how special UAF is. For instance, did you know we are currently in the top 7% of universities in the nation for research? UAF is a distinct university with strengths and expertise that should have UAF faculty, staff and students walking tall. No one at UAF should think that "outside" is where the expertise is. It is here!

Friday Focus: Forging ahead into a new academic year

    September 22, 2023

September in Fairbanks holds a special place in my heart. It marks the season of harvest, a time when many of us reap the rewards of our summer and prepare for the winter ahead. Evenings and weekends are filled with last-minute house projects, stacking wood and pulling out our extension cords and winter gear. Personally, I take pride in my tiny garden, which has been flourishing, and I've recently added some baby chickens to my growing homestead. Another reason I look forward to this time of year is the return of our students to UAF, whether they are coming back for another year or setting foot on our campus for the very first time.

Friday Focus: Celebrating abundance of fall enrollment

    September 15, 2023

Autumn graces the Interior with its season of plenty. Countless freezers brim with moose, caribou, salmon, and berries, while woodsheds bear testament to our careful preparations for the months ahead. With the onset of cooler days, our UAF community becomes a source of warmth and vitality, abuzz with activity and fresh starts. This abundance comes as a relief and brings a feeling of satisfaction that all the hard work of the past year has been successful. At Tuesday's Convocation, Chancellor White shared the great news that UAF welcomed about 2,500 new first-year students this fall. This is 650 more than last year. This is amazing, especially given the local and national headwinds on higher education enrollments. Let's take a closer look at the numbers.

Friday Focus: Program Review and Accreditation

    September 08, 2023

As the newly minted vice provost and accreditation liaison officer, I wanted to first welcome everyone back to the new academic year. Fall has always been my favorite time of year, and a large reason for that is the excitement that comes with the start of the new school year. Fall is also a time for reflection as we forge ahead into a new academic year. This fall semester should be a particularly exciting time for reflection because we will (1) implement the second year of our revamped academic program review process and (2) host a peer-evaluation team from the Northwest Commission on 久久热视频s and Universities for our Mid-Cycle (year 3) Accreditation Evaluation site visit. Since I will be overseeing both endeavors, I wanted to highlight them for your awareness and because many of you will be involved in these processes.
