Southeast Alaska is defined by the waters, islands, resources and people of the Inside Passage. Juneau is the state capital and largest city in the region, which includes 35 communities with just over 73,500 people, about a fifth of whom are Indigenous Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian. Tourism, mining and fisheries are the major industries.

Outreach includes programs in agriculture and horticulture; health, home and family development; nutrition and integrated pest management.

Learn how small-scale farming can strengthen Alaska&/ces/districts/juneau/8217;s food system and gain the skills to start growing in this free event.

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., presentations and seminars will be held in two locations at the Alaska State Fairgrounds: the event building on the Purple Trail (north end) and at Rebarchek Farm at E. Rebarchek Ave. (south end of fairgrounds.) Directions will be available at the event building check-in.

From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., networking and table discussions are scheduled, with refreshments and door prizes.&/ces/districts/juneau/160;

Jodie Anderson, director of the UAF Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension, will lead a plenary session on food security efforts in Alaska.

Presentations include seed starting, food preservation and canning, sourdough, access to land, meat rabbits, poultry, small business support, food as medicine and more. Presentations are designed for adults. Children are welcome but must remain with a supervising adult.&/ces/districts/juneau/160;

This three-day course is for Alaskans preparing for the certified pesticide exam with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. The training will be offered over Zoom and includes all necessary study materials for the categories of your choice. City and Borough of Juneau and Juneau School District employees with low bone density (osteopenia or osteoporosis) or who are interested in learning how bone and muscle strength can benefit their long-term health can apply for a Better Bones and Balance fitness program.

The class, which runs from April 7-30, consists of a mix of circuit-style training, independent workouts and group fitness activities. Workouts can be adapted for low- and high-fitness individuals. Nutrition for bone health and the broader health benefits of strength training and cardiovascular health will be discussed. The Juneau office of the ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓÆµ Cooperative Extension Service is offering the class.&/ces/districts/juneau/160;
